Checks and Balances

Before you head out onto the trails, it is important to give your bike a last minute check over. This will help to avoid any unexpected problems on the trail. Here’s what to check for:

1. Check headset by:
a. Clamping front tire between your knees and giving the handlebars a twist to each side. There should be very little flex.

b.. Get in the riding position on the bike and eyeball your stem to your front tire, making sure it is straight.

c. While standing over your bike, hold the front brake on and rock bike backward and forward. There should be no play in the headset.

2. Check your tire skewers and/or nuts to make sure your tires are on tight. Be sure the quick release lever is in the proper position.

3. Check your seat clamp to make certain the seat is properly fastened and aligned.

4. Check your brake pads making sure they are free of any debris left over

from a previous ride.

5. V-brake users, check your rims to make sure the braking surface is free of dirt and grease.

6. Make sure all your spokes are intact and that your rim is straight and true.

7. Check tire pressure.

8. Make sure your chain is lubed and free of chirps and squeaks.

Take your bike for a ride around the parking lot/driveway, etc. to make sure it is shifting properly.

You are now prepared for take off.
